TIME Magazine recently released a list of 12 extraordinary women, naming them TIME's 'Women of the Year.'
The list includes country singer Kacey Musgraves, actress Kerry Washington, Olympic champion Allyson Felix, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman, and poet Amanda Gorman. TIME also honored transgender actress Michaela Jaé Rodriguez for her role in LGBTQ+ representation.
In 2020, TIME released a project that highlighted one hundred influential women, one every year from 1920. The publication stated the purpose of the collection was to underline the impact that women have had on the world.
They stated,
"This was our way of correcting the record, addressing the legacy of a publication long known for its Man of the Year franchise, which only became Person of the Year in 1999."
That was, of course, before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Since then, TIME says that social inequality has only worsened the systems that hurt women, whether it be rising domestic violence or disproportionate job losses.
For 2022, TIME set out to compile a list of extraordinary women that combat that injustice. They've selected 12 women to honor at their ceremony, including civil rights lawyer Amal Clooney and NAACP lawyer Sherrilyn Ifill.
This list also includes Afghan journalist Zahra Joya, who is one of her country's only female reporters. She was forced to flee from the Taliban to London, but continues to write about the problems Afghan women face.
Tracy Chou is featured on the list, known for the app she created to combat online abuse. She's next to British midwife Jennie Joseph, who advocates for women and children in an effort to close the birth mortality rate that affects black mothers.
Amanda Nguyen, who drafted the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act, is also honored. Her bill was one of the few in history to pass unanimously through Congress.
The TIME Women of the Year Gala will be held in Los Angeles on March 8, International Women’s Day.
