Doctor Strange Added To The Cast Of 'Spider-Man 3'

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the upcoming film Spider-Man 3.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be returning to his role as Dr. Strange, who will act as the new mentor for Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, as he finds his way through the Marvel Universe.

Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., acted as Parker's mentor for the first installment of the films, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and then Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson took the boy under his wing during Spider-Man: Far From Home. Living life as a teenage superhero can be difficult, therefore there's always a character looking out for Parker and guiding him throughout the challenges he faces.

Dr. Strange will now be put in the role as Parker's mentor for this installment, which makes a lot of sense given the known circumstances. Fans were slightly confused when it was released that Jamie Foxx would be returning to the Spider-Verse as Electro. Foxx was last seen portraying this character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield in 2014. With the introduction of Dr. Strange to the film, some are speculating that there may be ties to alternate universes in this film, explaining Electro's return.

Doctor Strange Will Be In Two New MCU Films

Cumberbatch is also set to begin working on Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness around the same time production for Spider-Man 3 begins. The announcement of these two films come before the premiere of other Marvel films, such as Black Widow, The Eternals, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, all set to premiere in 2021.

2020 is the first year in a decade without a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Spider-Man: Far From Home, which came out on July 2, 2019 was the last MCU film to premiere. The next film to premiere is Black Widow on May 7, 2021, while there is also a new series Wandavision, set to premiere on Disney+ in December 2020, based on the characters Scarlet Witch and Vision.

Spider-Man 3 will be released in December 2021, marking the first time that a live action Spider-Man movie be released during the holiday season, rather than the summer.
