Spider-Man Doesn’t Wear A Cape, But He Sure Does Produce Sequels

Production has begun on Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2, with lead animator Nick Kondo confirming the news on his Twitter account.

What You Need To Know 

Previously, Sony announced the movie was pushing back from the original April 2022 release and is now dated for October 7, 2022.

The original film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $190M domestically and $375M globally.

Details of the sequel have been kept largely under wraps. Shameik Moore is expected to return, among other cast members. Joaquim Dos Santos is directing and Dave Callaham is scripting.

Revving Off Its Previous Successes

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verseis largely regarded as one of the best Spider-Man movies of all time, and a visionary take on the superhero genre. It was also awarded the Oscar for Best Animated Picture earlier in 2019. The Verge said in their review:

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a raucous, smart, self-referential adventure. The comics-inspired visuals are stunning, and the emotional coming-of-age story is relevant and inspiring, even as it acknowledges the many Spider-Man movies that have come before it. Sony is clearly looking for a way to launch its own distinct take on Spider-Man that can stand up to the live-action MCU version, and that franchise now has its first installment."
