Surprises And Snubs From This Year's Oscars

Every year, the Oscars come to town, and every year there are some nominees that leave you scratching your head, and some omissions that leave you upset. It's the cycle of life; Oscars come out, I get mad about Oscars, Oscars happen, I get over it. Here's the biggest surprises and snubs from this year's Academy Awards!

Surprise: Mank Gets 10 Nominations

I mean, Mank was a good movie, but ten? The callback to old Hollywood did lead the pack at the Golden Globes with six nominations, but then didn't lead the pack after the fact with a fat zero wins. Mank deserves these nominations, sure, but it's just a little odd that a film that clearly falls flat in comparison to its fellow nominees.

Snub: Black Dramas for Best Picture

After the SAG Awards put big praise on black dramas, putting Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Da 5 Bloods, and One Night in Miami in the best picture category.

However, the Oscars snubbed all three for Best Picture, with Judas and the Black Messiah being the only major black drama to be nominated for Best Picture, although all three of those films accumulated a lot of nominations on their own. But, it seems like black dramas were for the most part snubbed for Best Picture.

Surprise: The Trial of the Chicago 7 Shows Up Big

The Globes are normally a good indicator of the Oscars, which, after only one nomination at the Globes, spelled disappointment for Judas and the Black Messiah. But, we got a pleasant sort of surprise this time around, with six nominations for the Daniel Kaluuya starring film about the former head of the Black Panther Party.

It was an amazing film, and it deserves all the attention it just recieved.

Snub: No Love for the Mauritanian

The Mauritanian was one of the best films of the year, and after Jodie Foster picked up a win for Best Supporting Actress at the Globes, some people hoped the film would go further at the Academy Awards.

Unfortunately, nope. Not a single nomination for the Guantanamo Bay film, even for Foster. It's exceedingly rare to see a Golden Globe win not even translate to an Oscar nomination, but here we are.

Surprise: Thomas Vinterberg

I don't think anyone saw this one coming, but Thomas Vinterberg is up for Best Director for his film Another Round, a movie about a group of high school teachers who get drunk every day to see how it affects their lives.

It's a surprise nomination for someone who lacked praise from any major award show up to this point, and Another Roundis the first Danish film to get a nomination.

Snub: Regina King

While Chloé Zhao and Regina King both received best director nominations for their films Nomadland and One Night in Miami... at the Golden Globes, with Zhao of course taking home the trophy, it seems that Zhao will have to carry the torch for female directors alone this time around.

King seemed like an obvious choice for a Best Director Nomination, but it seems the Academy went in a different direction.

Surprise: LaKeith Stanfield

Starring alongside Daniel Kaluuya in Judas and the Black Messiah, it seemed like Kaluuya was getting all the love as the supporting man, while Stanfield got a little snubbed as the lead. But, in a strange turn of events, both actors have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, for the same movie. This of course leads to the question, which one of them is the actual star of this movie?

I don't know, and I don't care, because they both deserved it.

Snub: Sacha Baron Cohen

While I admit his absolute domination of the Golden Globes was a bit of a surprise, you'd think Borat Subsequent Moviefilm would have gotten a little more love than this. It's up for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Maria Bakalova is up for Best Supporting Actress, but outside of that, nothing.

It just doesn't feel like enough for a film that truly was a cultural moment this year.
