Change is coming to cinema. Yesterday, the Oscars officially announced new rules for the Best Picture category featuring new inclusion guidelines.
The Academy
The new rules and guidelines will hopefully bring diversity to any Best Picture nominees. The Oscars have been scrutinized in the past for lack of representation, and with mounting pressure to change things up, the Academy is making much needed changes. In a statement, Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson spoke on the new guidelines:
"The aperture must widen to reflect our diverse global population in both the creation of motion pictures and in the audiences who connect with them..The Academy is committed to playing a vital role in helping make this a reality..We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry."
While change is slow, the new initiative is a step in the right direction. See below for the full guidelines.
