The Kingdom of Dahomey has a story to be told, and Viola Davis will be battling in the frontlines for it.
Kicking off Black History Month, Davis tweeted,
"I’m deeply honored and excited to bring this incredible story of these badass female warriors to life. Get ready for THE WOMAN KING, exclusively in movie theaters this Fall!!"
The movie is set in The Kingdom of Dahomey and will chronicle the real-life events that occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries. Davis will play Nanisca, a general of the all-female military unit Dahomey Amazons.
Davis, having won an Academy award, two Tony awards and a Primetime Emmy award, will be accompanied by some big names for the upcoming cinematic thriller.
International Emmy nominee Thuso Mbedu of Amazon Prime's The Underground Railroad will play Nanisca's daughter. Captain Marvel and No Time to Die star Lashana Lynch will make an appearance on-screen as will Star Wars: The Force Awakens prominent actor John Boyega as King Ghezo.
