Jimmy Kimmel Questions Oscar Nominations During Late Night Show

Jimmy Kimmel Questions Oscar Nominations During Late Night Show

During his show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on Tuesday Feb. 8th, Kimmel challenges the announced Oscar nominations.

Kimmel questioned why the Academy Award-nominated movies have to be so "serious," he even stated that seems to be a "prerequisite." He threw a couple of jabs at films that were nominated, inlcuded "The Power of the Dog." Jane Campion's film received 12 Oscar nominations, Kimmel's response to this was there was:

“one for every person who saw it.” according to The Hollywood Reporter

He included that there were various "snubs" with the nominations. Including Lady Gaga not being nominated for her role in 'House of Gucci'. Kimmel added that the biggest snub of all for this year's Academy Awards was 'Spider-man No Way Home'.

“The biggest snub today in my opinion, and I’m actually even angry about this, I’m kind of embarrassed to say, is the unforgivable omission of 'Spider-man No Way Home'. Kimmel said

Kimmel went on to praise the film and then compared it to 'Don't Look Up'.

“You’re telling me Don’t Look Up was better than Spider-Man? It certainly was not,” Kimmel said

He adds the reality of "rotten tomato" scores from critics saying:

“Even if you go by the critics reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Don’t Look Up got a 46 [percent], Spider-Man is a 90. For god’s sake, Jackass Forever has an 89!” Kimmel adds

Kimmel then questioned:

“When did we decide that the best picture has to be serious?” Kimmel said

He ended the segment by hypothesizing how he thinks the nomination process works:

“Here’s what happened, the Academy voters, they looked at the list, they saw the names Leo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, they checked that box, and then they put their kids in the car and they went to see the movie Spider-Man. And they loved it. But they didn’t vote for it.” Kimmel said
