Tyler Perry, widely known for iconic movie roles, is much more than just a talented actor. The star has proven time and time again that he is committed to helping others. That is exactly why he will be receiving this year's Governors Award.
The Governor's Award is meant to recognize a star's achievements beyond just their landscape of work. As the definition for the award on the Emmys website says it:
"recognizes an individual, company, organization or project for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of the competition."
Perry's charity, The Perry Foundation, is being honored for the work it has done to help employment, inclusion, and the homeless. Eva Basler, a selection committee chair for the Governors Award, spoke on why Perry deserves this so much. She shared:
"Tyler Perry has changed the face of television and inspired a new generation of content creators. He pioneered a new brand of storytelling that engages people of color both in front of and behind the camera, and his shows have resonated with a global audience."
Perry spoke out about this recognition and how much it means to him, saying:
"I'm grateful for and humbled by this recognition from the Television Academy. I've always prided myself on the work we do at the studio, our diverse representation of people from all walks of life, and the community we've built. My hope is that through moments like this we can remind others of the power of ownership and show that when the world doesn't offer you a seat at the table, you can build your own."
The Primetime Emmys are set to air on Sunday, September 20th on ABC! Be sure to tune in.
