After a year filled with controversy, the Golden Globe Awards are off to a rocky start in 2022.

In 2019, a controversy broke where it was revealed one third of Hollywood Foreign Press Association members were flown to the set of Emily in Paris, just weeks before the show received its two Golden Globe nominations. Afterwards, NBC relinquished its role as broadcaster for this year's ceremony, where they cited lack of diversity and "ethical missteps" as their reasoning. At the time, the HFPA, who votes on the nominees and winners, did not have a single black person on their board of 80+ panelists.

Over one hundred PR firms threatened to boycott the HFPA, and Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia have since cut ties with the organization. Prominent celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo have spoken out against it, and Tom Cruise even returned his three awards in protest.

Now, just days before the showcase, the Golden Globes are not only without a network, but also without a host. An email from a talent booker at the Golden Globes reportedly reached out to several agencies, inquiring who would be interested in partaking. As of now, no celebrity has agreed.

The Golden Globes were originally set to compete with the Critic's Choice Awards for viewership, as both were scheduled for the same time slot on Sunday, January 9. The Critic's Choice Awards have since been postponed due to Omicron, alongside the Grammys and Sundance Film Festival. The Golden Globes, however, are set to continue on schedule, in person. There will be a small audience of HFPA members and limited guests, all required to be vaccinated, boosted, and show a negative PCR test. There will be no red carpet.

It is still unclear how audiences will be able to view this year's ceremony. The nominations were announced via livestream on the Globe's YouTube channel, and NBC states it does not see itself returning until 2023, only if major chances have been made to the HFPA by then.
