With three studio albums under her belt and multiple hits, Doja Cat is showing no signs of slowing down. The artist revealed her next album will be "predominantly rap."
In an interview with Elle, Doja discussed how audiences struggle to box her into one genre of music. At this year's Grammy's ceremony, the "Say So" singer received eight nominations. Among them was "Best Rap Song" for her collaboration with fellow rapper Saweetie titled "Best Friend." The nod left many questioning whether or not the artist is really a rapper. Doja said:
"I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well to begin with—I got a lot better." She continues, “I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s fine if people think that I can’t rap.”
The skepticism didn't stop there. Earlier this month, Doja won "Top R&B Female Artist" at the Billboard Music Awards over SZA and Summer Walker. Criticisms poured out online, with many saying the award should've gone to someone else, since many believed Doja fit more into rap and pop categories.
In the interview with Elle, Doja says her "real fans" know she raps, citing Lauren Hill and Busta Rhymes as artists she grew up listening to. She also shouts out veteran rapper Nicki Minaj as one of her influences.
“The way Nicki can carry herself felt almost alien to me, because I was kind of a little runty kid, trapped in her room, just watching YouTube videos. And back then I was like, ‘Damn, that’s dope.’
The artist recently cancelled her performances with The Weeknd on his upcoming tour due to routine surgery on her tonsils. The 26-year-old said she felt "horrible" for cancelling but was looking forward to healing and returning to music.
