After four Olympic Games, British diver Tom Daley has finally won an Olympic gold as one of the record-breaking LGBTQ+ athletes at the Tokyo Games.

The number of LGBTQ+ athletes this year is ground-breaking for the Olympics as we have 168 openly queer athletes competing worldwide. Daley came out in 2013 and has been a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community for a long time.

After his big win in the men's synchronized 10m dive, Daley discussed his journey and how he hopes that his win and the greater community in the games will help show the LGBTQ+ youth that they are not alone, that they can do anything they put their minds to, and that they can achieve anything by being who they are.

"I feel incredibly proud to say that I am a gay man and also an Olympic champion. When I was younger I didn't think I'd ever achieve anything because of who I was. To be an Olympic champion now just shows that you can achieve anything."

Daley's husband, son, and family watched from home as he won his first gold after 2 bronze medals in past Olympics. Wins like this are extremely important and historical for the Olympics and the LGBTQ+ community because queer athletes have not been given this same level of platform in the past.

Seeing national heroes that are openly queer is an amazing thing to watch because these stars will inspire younger generations to have more pride, be more accepting, and understand that anyone can do anything they set their mind to.

Congratulations to Tom Daley and Matty Lee on an amazing win! Tune into the Olympics on NBC now.
