For years, tension has existed between Dwayne Johnson and some of his co-stars in the Fast & Furious movies. Now, it seems that things have finally gone too far for the action star, and Johnson has announced that he will not appear in F9 nor its upcoming sequels.

During production of Fate of the Furious in 2016, Johnson lashed out against an unnamed co-star in a since-deleted Instagram post.

"Some conduct themselves as stand-up men and true professionals, while others don't. The ones that don't are too chicken s— to do anything about it anyway. Candy asses. When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I'm not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling — you're right."

At the time, it was reported that he was referring to meme icon Vin Diesel, whose behavior as an actor and decisions as a producer had frustrated Johnson greatly. Though this did not prevent Johnson from reprising his role for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, it evidently affected his willingness to appear with Diesel again. Diesel added fuel to the fire by claiming in a recent interview that he had aggravated Johnson on purpose, in order to extract a better performance from him.

"My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be ... That took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I'd have to do in order to get performances in anything I'm producing."

Johnson responded to Diesel's claims in an interview with THR to promote his upcoming movie Jungle Cruise.

"I laughed and I laughed hard. I think everyone had a laugh at that. And I'll leave it at that. And that I've wished them well. I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me."

Though by all accounts this zesty feud will mean the end of the Luke Hobbs character, if Johnson returned it would not be unprecedented. Other actors have left the Fast & Furious universe only to return later on—Diesel himself refused to appear in 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious, only to reverse himself later on and return for a cameo appearance in the third Fast & Furious film, followed by starring roles in all of its sequels.

Jungle Cruise releases simultaneously in theaters and through Disney+ with Premier Access on July 30th.
