Happy Friday, everybody! On today's episode of The Dish, Sonia Isabelle is here to give you the scoop on what brand new movies are worth the watch.
Stillwater
First up, in Stillwater, Matt Damon stars as a father who fights for the freedom of his daughter, played by Abigail Breslin, who is wrongfully accused of murder while traveling in France. Damon had this to say about the role:
“For one, he believes she's innocent so he doesn't wanna give up on her, and the other thing is he's carrying all this guilt for not being there for her."
Damon and Breslin haven't played major roles since 2019 in Ford v. Ferrari and Zombieland: Double Tap, respectively, so it's good to see them back on the big screen in Stillwater.
Does my name belong to me? My face? What about my life? My story? Why does my name refer to events I had no hand in? I return to these questions because others continue to profit off my name, face, & story without my consent. Most recently, the film #STILLWATER. \n\n/ a thread— Amanda Knox (@Amanda Knox) 1627597113
Believe it or not, the film is “loosely” based on a true story. Amanda Knox was wrongfully convicted of the murder of her roommate in Italy. She was later acquitted, but her name is still continuously used when referring to the murder case that she had nothing to do with. In a Twitter thread shared on Thursday, Knox expressed her side of the story. Before seeing Stillwater in the theater this weekend, give Knox’s thread a read.
Jungle Cruise
The adventure of the summer is finally here and you’re invited. Disney’s Jungle Cruiseexplores the story behind one of the most iconic attractions from the Disney theme parks. In the film, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt team up. Johnson had this to say about his costar:
“I’ve been a big fan of Emily for a very, very long time. Of course her acting speaks for itself she’s award winning she’s all these wonderful things. There’s nothing she can’t do.”
The duo enjoyed the world premiere of their new summer hit and they couldn’t be happier. The two have such fun chemistry on screen, so it’s no wonder that they hit it off in real life as well. Blunt said The Rock has become her “most enormous friend” along the way. Jungle Cruise is in theaters and on Disney+ with premier access now.
Twist
Acting veteran Michael Caine stars in Twist, a modern-day, well, twist on the classic Charles Dickens story, Oliver Twist. The title character is played by Jude Law's son, Raff. Rita Ora also co-stars as the leader of the pack, Dodge, who is called Artful Dodger in the original story. Twist is in theaters and on demand now.
The Green Knight
A24 is back at it again. The independent film company is known for its genre-bending films like The Lighthouse, Hereditary, Uncut Gems, etc. This time around,The Green Knight is no exception. Dev Patel stars as King Arthur’s nephew, Sir Gawain. The film has been described as esoteric, meaning you may be required to have some prior knowledge going into the film to fully understand and appreciate its complex story. The Green Knight is in theaters now.
