For the first time in history, Diana: A New Musical will premiere on Netflix before its Broadway premiere, which was postponed due to the pandemic.
Diana: A New Musical follows the live and tragic death of Princess Diana and began previews on Broadway on March 2nd ahead of a March 31st opening night, which never happened. Broadway shut down due to the pandemic on March 12th and will remain closed until 2021.
For the first time in Broadway history, the musical will premiere on Netflix before its rescheduled May 25th, 2021 opening. The cast and crew will film the stage production without an audience at the Longacre Theater for Netflix following necessary safety precautions.
Producers for the musical shared their excitement for the project, saying:
"We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn't be more excited to finally be able share our show with theater lovers everywhere. Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide."
The filmed production will feature the original cast including Jeanna de Waal in the titular role, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles, and two-time Tony Award winner Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth.
Now more than ever, live theater is becoming widely available for consumption, following the release of Hamilton on Disney+ and news of a Once on this Island Disney+ film adaptation. While the future of Broadway remains unclear, Diana: A New Musical could become one of many musicals to find their new homes on streaming platforms. Nonetheless, theater and royal family fans alike are excited to experience the story of Princess Diana in a never before seen way!
