The 'Twilight star' transforms into the people's princess!

In the upcoming film "Spencer," Kristen Stewart is set to play Princess Diana. The film will follow Princess Diana's choice in removing herself from the path to become Queen.

"Spencer" will follow the late Princess Diana, as she rejects her fairy tale ending, much like Meghan Markle during her marriage to Prince Harry. The film is named Spencer after the name Diana held before her marriage to Charles, thus centering the story around her and her ability to resist what was expected of her. In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Director Pablo Larraín, known for Jackie and Neruda, dished on his choice of Kristen Stewart for the role, the title of the film and more.

Unexpectedly, the film does not focus on Diana's tragic death, but instead, her surprising rejection of royal life. Larraín says,

"We all grew up, at least I did in my generation, reading and understanding what a fairy tale is. Usually, the prince comes and finds the princess, invites her to become his wife, and eventually she becomes queen. That is the fairy tale. When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, I'd rather go and be myself, it's a big big decision, a fairy tale upside down. I've always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do. That is the heart of the movie."

While Stewart may be a shocking choice to some, Larraín feels confident in his decision, saying,

"Kristen is one of the great actors around today,. To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it's very beautiful to see. I think she's going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature."

Since her early success in the Twilight series, Stewart has since built up an impressive resume as an actress. The star can be recognized for various indie films, and most recently for her portrayal of French actress Jean Seberg in "Seberg."

Teaming up with Larraín for the project, is screenwriter Steven Knight, whose credits include Peaky Blinders and The Hundred-Foot Journey.

Deadline took to Twitter to share the exciting news and insightful interview.

Production for "Spencer" is set to begin in early 2021 and will be unveiled to buyers at the Cannes Virtual Market.
