'Minari' Makes History With Six Oscar Nominations

The Korean American immigrant story 'Minari' has made history at the Oscars, being nominated for six awards, including the first Asian-American lead nominated for Best Actor.

Nominated for six Oscars, Minari (2020) has made history at this year's Academy Awards. The touching film following the lives of a Korean American family who is new to America.


Best Director

Lee Isaac Chung has been nominated for Best Director against Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round, 2020), David Fincher (Mank, 2020), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman, 2020), and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, 2020).

This year's nominees are some of the most diverse that the Oscars has ever seen, with two female directors making history as nominees of the same year.

Best Actor

Steve Yeun has made history as the first Asian-American Best Actor nominee in Oscar history. Also nominated are Anthony Hopkins (The Father, 2020), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal, 2019), the late Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, 2020), and Gary Oldman (Mank).

Best Supporting Actress

Yuh-Jung Youn, Soonja of Minari, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress and is the first Korean woman in the category. Also nominated are Amanda Seyfried (Mank), Olivia Colman (The Father), Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, 2020), and Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy, 2020).

Best Original Screenplay

Along with Best Director, Chung is nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Fellow nominees include Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7, 2020), Shada King and Will Berson (Judas and the Black Messiah, 2021), and Darius and Abraham Marder of The Sound of Metal.

Best Original Score

Composer Emile Mosseri has been nominated for Best Original Score against Terence Blanchard (Da 5 Bloods, 2020), James Newton Howard (News of the World, 2020), Trent Reznor and Atticus Rose (Mank and Soul), and Jon Batiste (Soul, 2020).

Best Picture

The film has also been nominated for Best Picture against Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, Mank, The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of Chicago 7, and Nomadland.
