The iHeartRadio Music Festival has joined others in its ranks that have gone virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of their regular Las Vegas extravaganza, the festival will be streamed for all on the CW.

After a successful nine years, the iHeartRadio festival has become a festival staple, occurring annually in September in Las Vegas for thousands of fans, drawing some of the biggest names in the music industry. For 2020, the festival will look a little different.

Performers will perform on stages in Los Angeles and Nashville to no audiences on September 18th and 19th and their sets will be live streamed on the CW app, along with iHeartRadio stations. Then, the best moments from those performers will be edited for a two-part special airing on CW the following weekend.

Set to perform this year are BTS, Coldplay, Kane Brown with Khalid, Keith Urban, Migos, Miley Cyrus, Thomas Rhett, Usher and more with Ryan Seacrest as the host. With appropriate safety precautions taken, these huge names will have the opportunity to perform on a real stage, rather than their living room floors, for many what will be the first time in months. This creates a more authentic concert feel with better sound and visual effects.

Variety spoke to John Sykes, president of entertainment enterprises for iHeartMedia, about how the new festival allows for more creative freedom and fan integration saying:

"There will be fans who will be connected talking one-on-one in the dressing room with artists. We could never put a regular fan in an artist dressing room, but we can do it on a video screen. We have some virtual ideas too where fans will be able to perform with one of the artists onstage. So we're using the challenges to reinvent and come up with creative things that have maybe never been done before."
