Malcolm X

Denzel Washington was nominated for an Oscar for his biographical portrayal of the powerful African American Nationalist leader, Malcolm X. The film follows his early years as a two-bit gang member which leads him to jail where he turns to the Nation of Islam and the writings of Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm converts to the Islamic religion rising to become a powerful figure in the civil rights movement only to be assassinated on February 21, 1965. Audiences and fans of Washington have called Spike Lee's film the best performance of his career.

The Ides Of March

Directed by George Clooney this political drama is about the intense last days before a contested Ohio presidential primary. A campaign press secretary gets involved in a political scandal that threatens to destroy his candidate's opportunity to be president. This film is filled with politics, shocks, and unexpected twists and includes an A-list cast starring Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Jeffrey Wright, and Max Minghella.

All The President's Men 

All the President's Men is the 1976 film that won four Academy Awards and was nominated for Best Picture. Alan J. Pakula's film is based on two of the best reporters from the "The Washington Post" Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) who uncover the shocking details of the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation. The film is fascinating watch and will keep audiences hooked.

Lee Daniels' The Butler

Lee Daniels' The Butler is another favorite on our list. This film looks at the life of Cecil Gaines played by Forest Whitaker who served eight presidents from 1952 to 1986 as the White House's head butler offering a distinct look at political and racial history that was made. The film was inspired by the real life butler, Eugene Allen.

Veep 

What has been called the perfect political satire is HBO's Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The series ran for seven seasons as it tells the story of the former Senator Selina Meyer who is Vice President of the United States as the job is nothing like she ever thought it would be. The show follows her and her staff as they attempt to leave a lasting and impactful legacy.

The West Wing

The West Wing was a fan favorite for any political drama fan. The series aired for seven seasons on NBC and was created by Aaron Sorkin that showed the lives of the staff in the West Wing of the White House. The series won two Golden Globe awards and recently the cast got back together for a reunion that can be seen exclusively on HBO Max.

The Comey Rule

Earlier this year Showtime released a two-part event series, The Comey Rule starring Jeff Daniels and Brendan Gleeson. Daniels stars as star a former FBI Director, James Comey while Gleeson stars as President Donald J. Trump telling the story of two powerful men who have very different views and ethics causing conflicts and disagreements. The series received solid reviews and is looking at possible awards this season.
