Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird have some exciting news to share. The athletes have taken a major step in their relationship, becoming fiancés! WNBA Seattle Storm basketball guard Sue Bird broke the news about their pending nuptials in an Instagram post on Friday evening.
The couple appears to be at the edge of an infinity pool with Rapinoe doing the honors of kneeling down on one knee, proposing to her girlfriend of four years.
The couple met at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where they quickly began dating. Their love story has inspired many LGBTQIA+ community members to be comfortable in loving who they love.
Sue Bird has three WNBA championships and four Olympic gold medals while Rapinoe has two Olympic gold medals and two World Cup titles. Rapinoe is a member of the United States women's national soccer team. In 2019, she won Best FIFA Women's Player after winning the World Cup. She is commonly believed as one of the best soccer players of all time.
Many fans were not surprised by the couple's happy news. A week prior to their engagement, Rapinoe said in a statement to PEOPLE that she could see herself getting married to her then girlfriend.
"We've talked about it, definitely. I think in the future, for sure... We're not like, 'Oh let's just—' but I always tell her that if she were ever to break up with me or want to, that's totally fine, that's your choice. Just know that I will crumble to dust."
The fiancés have spent every day of quarantine together and have provided emotional strength for one another during these difficult months.
"It is nice to just be able to totally unwind and be completely yourself and, you know, have someone understand and appreciate how special it is, what you are doing, but also just love you for who you are and just to be that kind of support system."
We are so happy for the amazing couple.
