Conan O'Brien Announces Plans for a New Show

Conan O'Brien

As Conan comes to an end, its host is moving on to his next project.

After almost 11 years of hosting Conan on TBS, late-night host Conan O'Brien is moving on. Starting soon, he'll be the host of a new weekly variety series on HBO Max, a streaming service owned by WarnerMedia (which also owns TBS).

O'Brien has been a staple of the late-night show scene for nearly 30 years. Originating as a writer for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, he replaced David Letterman on NBC's Late Night in the early 1990s. After hosting the show from 1993–2009, he became the host of The Tonight Show for seven months, during which he acquired the nickname "Coco". However, he was soon forced to exit this role due to chicanery from NBC and Jay Leno.

From 2010 onwards, he hosted Conan on cable station TBS. Though the format of this was similar to his previous hosting gigs, O'Brien was able to be much more ambitious with his new program. In 2015, O'Brien filmed segments in Cuba, becoming the first American television personality to do so in over 50 years, and in 2016 he visited South Korea and filmed in the Korean Demilitarized Zone. In 2018, he also began hosting a weekly podcast, Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, which went on to feature guests such as acclaimed comedian Will Ferrell and zesty former president Barack Obama.

Few details have been released about O'Brien's new show, but it's expected to be a departure from his previous talk-show format. The hour-long finale episode of Conan will air on June 24th and will include a retrospective of his show as well as surprise celebrity guests.
