Judge Suspends Britney Spears' Conservatorship After 13 Years

Britney Spears

A Los Angeles judge has suspended Britney Spears' father, Jamie Spears, from the conservatorship that has controlled the pop singer's life for 13 years.

In 2008 Britney Spears' conservatorship was officially established. Jamie Spears gained control over his daughter's personal life and business as Britney was deemed incapable of taking care of herself due to mental health issues and substance abuse.

On September 29th, Jamie Spears' lawyer, Vivian Lee Thoreen, has asked the judge to terminate the conservatorship effective immediately. Britney's lawyer, however, asked the judge to wait to further an investigation on Jamie Spears' conduct.

After hearing both requests, Judge Brenda Penny decided to suspend the conservatorship for Britney's best interest. She stated:

"The current situation is not tenable."

The hearing to end the conservatorship is scheduled for November 12.

This is an incredible victory for the singer, who has tried to regain control of her life from the moment the conservatorship started in 2008. This past June, however, is when things started to change for Britney. The singer had declared her father's abusive conduct as media attention for the Free Britney movement grew stronger. At the time, Britney had said:

"I just want my life back. It's been 13 years and it's enough."

In June, Spears had continued declaring she was severely traumatized and that those who had been in control of her conservatorship should be investigated and jailed.

The entire vicissitude has generated interests of fans from all over the world. FX and Hulu have just released a documentary titled Controlling Britney Spears, which is a deep dive into the singer's role in the conservatorship and how people around her have economically profited from her.

Another hit release has been Netflix's documentary Britney vs. Spears, in which Erin Lee Carr and journalist Jenny Eliscu tackle Britney's journey and the way Spears' complaints have been severely ignored by the court all this years.

Britney's fiancé, Sam Asghari, has also celebrated the end of the conservatorship by posting a picture of a lioness on Instagram, captioning:

"The power of the lioness!!!!! #freebritney"

Britney Spears' conservatorship has finally ended. After all these years, the singer can finally breathe again.
