The film that released three weeks ago reclaimed its number one spot and surprisingly beat out In The Heights to do so.
This weekend was full of box office surprises with many in the industry still questioning how exactly the pandemic has affected theaters. Not only the pandemic, but also the release of movies on streaming services may be seriously affecting the numbers as viewers are left questioning why they should pay more for a theater ticket if they already have access to the film with their monthly streaming fee.
Let's recap the top films for this weekend:
'A Quiet Place Part II'
A Quiet Place Part IIis the sequel to the 2018 horror film starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. It was a big weekend for the film as it reclaimed the number one spot, making $11.7 million in the three-day period and surpassing $100 million domestically.
The film's creators decided not to release on streaming services yet and this might be one of the main reasons why the film is the first to reach the $100 million milestone since Sonic the Hedgehogdid so pre-pandemic in February of 2020.
'In The Heights'
In The Heightsfailed to reach expectations, only grossing $11.4 million in its opening weekend. These numbers surprised audiences and critics alike, with many predicting the film to signify the resurrection of theaters with big opening weekend numbers. There are a few reasons why the film may have flopped in its opening weekend:
In The Heights released on HBO Max on the same day it released in theaters. Streaming options clearly have become a new obstacle that studios are still trying to learn how to operate around. We do not yet know the streaming viewing numbers as Warner Bros has not released them, but one interesting statistic is that Latinos made up 40% of the ticket buyers.
Lack of big-name stars also may be a reason for the film not doing as well as it was expected to. The film stars Anthony Ramos and Melissa Barrera as some of the biggest names and while they may be decently well-known, they are not on the same level as some of the A-list celebrities we see in some of the major blockbusters that have recently come out. The film has not released internationally yet and streaming numbers may give us some more insight into the reality of how successful it actually will be.
'Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway'
Peter Rabbit 2: The Runawayreached third place in the box office in its opening weekend with $10.4 million domestically. The film already had released internationally before finally appearing in the US and has reached over $60 million globally. While we can expect the sequel to not do as well as the original, the film seems to be following the success set by other children's films during the pandemic (The Croods: A New Age; Raya and The Last Dragon).
'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It'
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do Ithad a solid second weekend with $10 million grossed domestically and over $100 million internationally. The film also arrived on HBO Max on its opening which may help to explain the numbers we have been seeing so far.
'Cruella'
The latest Disney film starring Emma Stone made $6.7 million in the box office this weekend, bringing the domestic total over the $50 million mark. Disney released the film on its Disney Plus Premier Access tier which is definitely a major factor in why this film is not grossing as much as some of the strict theater releases we see on this list. This gives us some perspective in what to expect with Disney's Premier Access system in the future as many Disney films are set to release in theaters along with the streaming service's additional $30 fee.
The Rest of This Weekend's Top Ten
