Black is King is based on the music of The Lion King: the Gift, which was released as a companion soundtrack to the 2019 film. In an interview with ABC, Beyoncé spoke about the importance of the soundtrack to The Lion King: the Gift:

"This soundtrack is a love letter to Africa. I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa and not just use some of the sounds and did my interpretation of it. I wanted it to be authentic to what is beautiful about the music in Africa."

In regards to how Beyoncé feels about the power of this music, she says:

"I feel like the soundtrack it becomes visual in your mind. It's a soundscape. It's more than just the music because each song tells the story of the film."

Beyonce's Message

Black is King takes on an even deeper meaning now because of the recent Black Lives Matter protests and due to the tragic death of George Floyd and countless others. In an Instagram video first showing a trailer of Black is King, Beyonce wrote a powerful message within her caption. She shared:

"The events of 2020 have made the film's vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey. We are all in search of safety and light. Many of us want change. I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books. With this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy."
