Beyoncé is set to release a new visual album titled Black Is King on July 31, and will be available for streaming on Disney+!
'Black Is King' Trailer
Black Is King is written, directed and executive produced by Beyoncé with intentions of representing and honoring black excellence, tradition and culture. The film will also include special guests and features from artists previously heard on The Lion King album.
The press release gave a brief synopsis of what to expect in the film:
"The voyages of Black families, throughout time, are honored in a tale about a young king's transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father's teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne."
In addition to the music, the important lessons of the film will be reimagined for the visual album for young kids to be inspired to 'find their own crown':
"The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future."
In Beyoncé's recent Instagram post, she expresses her pride and excitement about her upcoming project. While working on the film for a year, she touches on how it is more important than ever; the post reads:
"...The events of 2020 have made the film's vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey. We are all in search of safety and light. Many of us want change. I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world..."
