Alexis Lynn on New Single 'Something to Prove' & the Importance of Mental Health

"I think the more personal you get in music, it really opens it up to the more people who can relate to it," she tells Sonia Baghdady of Advocate Now.

Singer-songwriter Alexis Lynn infuses vulnerability into her music. The Indigenous artist has just released a new song, Something to Prove, which shares her perspective as a bisexual woman, and how she struggled to accept her sexuality.

"You kind of internalize the societal norms," Lynn tells Sonia Baghdady of Advocate Now.

Despite her unique perspective, Lynn found that audiences from all backgrounds could relate to her single.

"Seeing so many people relate to it was really amazing and really shocking, honestly," she continues. "But I think the more personal you get in music, it really opens it up to the more people who can relate to it."

Lynn also addresses mental health through her work, and has long been open about her struggles with body dysmorphia and self confidence.

"Similar to sexuality, mental health is also a journey, and something that's a continuous effort," she says, adding, "It's something you have to put an effort towards, and advocate for your own mental health. And I think beyond support systems, also being conscious of what kind of media I ingest, and what kind of content I look at and absorb."
