Award season has begun and we've got a look at some films to watch for!
Cinemas have been closed and virus numbers have been on the rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Co-host of E!'s Nightly Pop, Hunter March, hopped on Zoom to to share his thoughts with our Sonia Isabelle:
"They have this interesting challenge but it's also it's not like award shows were going up in ratings every year for the last 10 years. It's like something needed to shake it up and this is an opportunity."
The Oscars usually announce their nominees in January, but now the nominations will be released on March 15, 2021. The Golden Globe nominations have also been delayed from December to February 3, 2021. Most of this year's big films have been moved to on demand, been going straight to streaming or have been put on hold and we are taking a look at the films to be considered for award season.
Tenet
One the big films to be released in theaters in August 2020 was Christopher Nolan's Tenet. Nolan's latest big feature starred John David Washington and Robert Pattinson as the film plays with the concept of time and time travel. The film is still playing in theaters as it is scheduled to hit digital and Blu-ray on December 15.
Nomadland
Directed by Chloé Zhao the film tells the story of Fern (Francis McDormand) as she loses everything after the Great Recession. Follow her as she travels in her van living as a nomad wandering across the American West. Nomadland has picked up multiple nominations this year including the Gotham Awards for best feature and for Francis McDormand's incredible performance. Disney has hopes to release it in theaters.
One Night in Miami
An early Oscar favorite has been Regina King's directorial debut One Night in Miami. With a powerful screenplay by Kemp Powers the film tells the story of the real life encounter between Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge). The film will be released in theaters on Christmas day and available on Amazon Prime Video January 15.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Netflix continues to dominate as the streaming platform has numerous films considered for award season. Chadwick Boseman's final film performance can be seen in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. The film earned Boseman a nomination for best actor at this year's Gotham Awards as the film tells the story of the "Mother of the Blues" Ma Rainey played by Viola Davis based on the Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play and directed by George C. Wolfe. The film will be available for streaming starting December 18.
Mank
Another film soon to be available on Netflix is mastermind David Fincher's Mank. The film is about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz's journey and the writing of Citizen Kane directed by the iconic Orson Welles. Oscar winner Gary Oldman takes on the leading role of Herman Mankiewicz as the film also stars Amanda Seyfried and Lily Collins. The film will be released December 4.
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Aaron Sorkin'sThe Trial of the Chicago 7 is currently available on Netflix with a major all-star cast with the likes of Michael Keaton, Eddie Redmayne, Frank Langella, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Kelvin Harrison Jr, and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Da 5 Bloods
You also can't forget Spike Lee's film Da 5 Bloods that was released over this past summer. The film includes another amazing performance from Chadwick Boseman as the film tells the story of four African American veterans who return to Vietnam to search for the remains of their squad leader and to find a buried treasure.
