WATCH: Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer & More in 'The Boys in the Band' Trailer

The Cast of 'The Boys in the Band'

Jim Parson, Matt Bomer and Zachary Quinton take on new film 'The Boys in the Band.'

The new adaptation for Netflix is based on the Tony Award-winning production of The Boys in the Band.

Directed by Joe Mantello and produced by Ryan Murphy, The Boys in the Band follows a group of gay men who gather for a birthday party, hosted by Michael (Jim Parsons). Everything is all fun, games and laughs, but when the party is interrupted by a visit from the host's past...the evening turns upside down.

The 2018 Broadway production featured an ensemble of openly gay actors: Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesús, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington and Tuc Watkins. All returned for the Netflix project after the stage production won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. The show initially debuted Off-Broadway in 1968.

The Official Trailer

In an interview with ET, Parsons explained the significance of retelling this story with an all openly-gay cast.

"It's very meaningful to be able to play these parts as out gay actors 50 years later, when so many of these men not only hid their sexuality but died of AIDS eventually, a disease that undoubtedly was allowed to get as bad as it did in part due to homophobia, a secretiveness and no action being taken," Parsons said. "It's not a small deal to have that many out, gay actors all in the same production together."

This is just one of the many Netflix projects Murphy has been working on, as he is one of the executive producers of the Emmy-nominated Hollywood and hit show The Politician. Murphy also directed The Prom based on the Broadway musical that is expected to be released around the Christmas season.
