We're feeling the need for speed!

Sequel to their 1986 smash hit, "Top Gun", Paramount has finally dropped the NEW official trailer for the upcoming "Top Gun: Maverick".

"Top Gun" follows the story of hotshot pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) during his training at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School. "Top Gun: Maverick" will see Maverick fully grown as he flips roles, becoming an instructor at Top Gun.

Despite the time that's passed, Maverick is still as reckless and spirited as audiences last saw him. As Rear Admiral (Ed Harris) tells him in the trailer,

"Thirty plus years of service, combat medals, citations, only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last forty years. Yet you can't get a promotion, you won't retire, and despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should at least be a two-star admiral by now, yet here you are. Captain. Why is that?"

To which Maverick responds,

"It's one of life's mysteries, sir."

Maverick trains a group of Top Gun graduates for a mission unlike any other that "demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it." He encounters Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), aka "Rooster," the son of Maverick's late friend Nick Bradshaw, aka "Goose," who died during a training exercise gone wrong.

Bradley is seen in the trailer telling Maverick,

"My dad believed in you. I'm not gonna make the same mistake."

There's a point in the trailer where the character Iceman (Val Kilmer), Maverick's rival in the original "Top Gun," can be seen. Fans aren't sure exactly what his role in the sequel will be, but are excited for his return nonetheless.

The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, and also stars Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, and Greg Tarzan Davis. It was originally set to premiere in 2020, but was pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic.

The trailer continues with Maverick finally in a pilot seat. Rear Admiral warns him that "the end is inevitable" and his kind is "heading for extinction." Maverick responds,

"Maybe so sir. But not today."

"Top Gun: Maverick" lands in theaters May 27.
