2021 is the year of the superwoman! In today's Equality Spotlight, we discuss upcoming superhero movies that'll star some of our favorite female actresses.
Javicia Leslie, who will take over as Batwoman, said:
"This will empower someone to see a black female superhero. You don't get to see that that often."
Season 2 of Batwoman premiers Jan. 17th on the CW.
Additionally, Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Wanda (The Scarlet Witch) in the new television miniseries, WandaVision, streaming on Disney+. She shared:
"It's like a conversation of American sitcom through the decades with Marvel Films and they're constantly in dialogue with one another so it's been... really fun."
Marvel will also release a stand-alone Black Widow movie starring Scarlett Johansson on May 7th, but Marvel does not stop there.
Actress Awkafina will star in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which will release in July. Joining her in November is Angelina Jolie and Selma Hayek, who will be leading ladies in The Eternals.
We asked movie and TV writer Mara Wrienstien (SP?) about the new wave of female empowerment in Hollywood. She said:
"There's no such thing as a coincidence in Hollywood. It's all about what makes money, and right now at this moment female superheroes are making money... The future is now when it comes to female superheroes."
Be sure to keep a look out for all of these incredible and empowering projects in the upcoming year!
