A new leak has made public the title that The Matrix 4 has been using in test screenings: The Matrix Resurrections. After years of anticipation, it seems as though the film is nearing completion.
The leaks came from a Twitter user, David Manning, who also claimed that the new film was impressive but would be controversial among audiences.
THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS screened this afternoon and it is: weird, meta, engrossing, surprisingly funny, and ambitious to a fault. I expect WOM to be wildly mixed but the people who love it will *love* it.— David Manning (@David Manning) 1623822275
Little is known about this new film, which is being released nearly twenty years after the franchise seemingly concluded in 2003 with The Matrix Revolutions. So far, it has been confirmed that Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne are not reprising their roles as Agent Smith and Morpheus, but Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith are returning as Neo, Trinity, and Niobe, respectively. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), Jonathan Groff (Hamilton), and Christina Ricci (Grey's Anatomy) have all been cast in unspecified roles.
Even the director's chair has had a bit of turnover, with Lana Wachowski returning without her sister Lilly, who co-directed the previous three Matrixfilms. Writers David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon are joining Lana in creating the script; Mitchell wrote the book that became the Wachowskis' acclaimed Cloud Atlas film, while Hemon is known for writing The Lazarus Project. Yuen Woo-ping, who choreographed the zesty action sequences of the original trilogy, is also not returning and will be replaced by John Wick stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio.
The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled for release on December 22, 2021.
