As drive-in movies start making a comeback due to social gathering restrictions, New Jersey is taking it one step further with their series of drive-in concerts.
Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, NJ, has announced their plans on how to bring back the magic of live concerts down to the shore. On July 11th, New Jersey favorites Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes will kick-off Drive-In Live sponsored by the Count Basie Center for the Arts.
The musical group has been a staple in summer entertainment at the shore that fans look forward to every year. The group is often joined by special guests during their performances, especially the legendary Bruce Springsteen. Because of this, fans are hopeful of the chance that Springsteen may make an appearance. According to Variety, lead singer Johnny Lyon expressed his feelings about performing by stating:
"The Asbury Jukes and I are so excited that we can play this first of its kind live concert and help get New Jersey started on a quick and healthy return to normal.
Lyon continued by sharing:
"Why sit at home when 'We're Havin' A Party,' drive-in style? We'll safely see everyone July 11th."
The concert space accommodates up to 1,000 cars with four passengers per vehicle. To correspond with social distancing rules, each vehicle will be spaced out 9 feet apart from one another and parked in a stagger formation to eliminate any risk of contact. Additionally, patrons are only allowed to the leave their vehicle to use the restroom and are required to wear a facemask while doing so.
Following the Southside Johnny and the Asbury Juke's performance, on Sunday, July 12th famous comedian Jim Gaffigan will perform stand-up live onstage. The ticket prices range from $150 to $250 per vehicle and will be strictly mobile. A portion of the proceeds will go to the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund. Tickets will go onsale this Friday, June 5th at 10 AM ET on ticketmaster.
