Timothée Chalamet made his first hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend with musical guest Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Here are the highlights!
It was a round circle moment for Chalamet as his mom is actually a veteran of the show...she was doing background work on SNL before Timothée was even born. Producers of the show dug up just one of the old clips to show within the monologue. Mrs. Chalamet could be seen reacting in the back of the sketch "Massive Head Wound Harley."
To make things more sweet, the host gave a shoutout to his mom who joined him by appearing in the audience.
"She's the reason I'm alive. She's the reason I have an acting career. Mom, I love you. She's right there."
He continued on with his opening monologue which included a short Christmas carol about New York City.
Political Satire
This past weekend, the U.S. approved a COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use which means prepared doses could begin national distribution. Dr. Fauci (Kate McKinnon) and Dr. Birx (Heidi Gardner) answer questions at a news conference relating to the distribution process. They joke about the time and ways in which people could get the vaccine, all while addressing Dr. Fauci's fans who continually throw bras at him.
Coronavirus
The top sketch of the night, a family of Coronavirus cells come home for the holidays and begin to talk about the past year. Timothée Chalamet, Cecily Strong, Beck Bennett, and Lauren Holt each play the cells who have played different parts in the pandemic. Bennett's character is responsible for the second wave while Holt's character wen't off to college and is proud to be a super-spreader. Chalamet's rebellious character threatens to get vaccinated- disappointing his family.
Holiday Fun
The other Christmas sketch from the night, a mock Holiday Baking Championship episode is held in which all but one of the contestants really miss the mark on delivering festive desserts. Chalamet's cake comes alive and begins to eat the baker.
Pete Davidson
This is one of two sketches that paired Chalamet and Davidson together. The first has them playing up and coming wrappers who can't quite define the genre while appearing on a talk show. This sketch being a bit more memorable, the two pose as New York Jets fans who say, much like Trump, their football team has actually won every game they've lost. The two call the NFL "rigged."
Dolly Parton
Melissa Villaseñor hopped into the guest chair during the weekend update segment. Though she was supposed to pop in to sing a few Christmas carols, she took the opportunity to final show off her Dolly Parton impression. You'll be pleased to know it was spot on! Dolly Parton has had a big year from releasing her new Christmas album to donating a million dollars to the research for the COVID-19 vaccine. This past week, she even saved a child from being hit by a car.
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Last but not least, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band performed "Ghosts" as the musical guests of the night. It's been a big year for Springsteen as well. The musician released another album and broke a record for having an album chart to a top five slot- six decades in a row. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band also performed their song I'll See You In My Dreams.
