Whether these flicks have you tear up with dreams of royalty or laugh out loud at the stupidity within the palaces, these royal families are ones to remember.
The Princess Diaries (2001)
San Francisco local Mia Thermapolis (Anne Hathaway) and her estranged grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews) are the royal leaders of Genovia. The Queen's husband and son, Mia's dad, are both gone leaving Mia to be the rightful heir to the kingdom. Having discovered the sudden news at 16, Mia is caught having to navigate between high school and a kingdom that she may not even want.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
Um of course I had to add the second installment, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) to the list. Having accepted her position in Genovia, Mia is preparing to take on the role of being Queen when Parliament discusses her ineligibility as a single woman. Mia must get engaged in thirty days or sacrifice the throne leading her to meet Nicholas (Chris Pine) who at first has ill intentions, but soon falls in love with the nerdy highness.
As an empowered woman, Mia convinces Parliament to change the law, fighting for gender equality, becomes Queen, and begins a relationship with Nick. Ah, isn't this just the best feel-good flick?
The Royals (2015-2018)
E! Network's The Royals follows the Henstridge family, the royals of England. King Simon Henstridge (Vincent Regan) and Queen Helena Henstridge (Elizabeth Hurley) have three children, Prince Robert (Max Brown) and twins Princess Eleanor (Alexandra Park) and Prince Liam (William Moseley). The family balances familial and romantic issues like any other family, however in the public's eye.
'A Christmas Prince' Trilogy (2017-2019)
Aldovia's royal family is in shambles after the passing of their King. Sent out on a journalistic mission, Amber Moore (Rose McIver) disguises herself as Princess Emily Charlton's (Honor Kneafsey) tutor Martha Anderson. Now in the palace, Amber begins bonding with the Charltons, especially Prince Richard Bevan Charlton (Ben Lamb) who's hesitant on taking the throne. Although Amber is exposed for her lies, the Prince and his family can't help the fact that they've fallen in love with the young journalist.
Now they're getting married and Amber will be crowned Queen of Aldovia. Current Queen Helena Charlton (Alice Krige) and Amber are now in battle on whether to plan a traditional or modern wedding, proving Amber doesn't fit in. However, Amber fights for authenticity in the face of the public and in the private quarters of the palace.
Then the two decided to have a baby! Now pregnant, Amber must find the culprit who stole the treaty between the Aldovians and the Penglians before a curse is set over her first born.
Reign (2013-2017)
The CW series Reignfollowed the life of Mary, Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane) as she navigated her marriage with King Francis II of France (Toby Regbo) before his tragic death. With everyone against Mary, she loses her power, but returns in the final season to reclaim it.
With the help of her older half-brother James (Dan Jeannotte) and others, Mary rises and even creates tension with Queen Elizabeth of England I (Rachel Skarsten) after marrying Lord Darnley (Will Kemp) and English man in line for the throne.
The Windsors (2016-)
Channel 4's The Windsors (2016-) is a satirical comedy on the lives of today's most talked about royal family. The British sitcom follows Prince Charles (Henry Enfield) and Princess Camilla (Haydn Gwynne), a dopey old guy and his villainous wife who craves the throne. Prince William (Hugh Skinner) and Prince Harry (Richard Goulding and Tom Durant-Pritchard) even navigate their relationships to Kate (Louise Ford) and Meghan (Kathryn Drysdale) in a complete absurd environment.
While the actual royal family takes the front page of all your news outlets, take a break with these royal families instead!
