According to THR, screenwriter and director Nia DaCosta will be the new director for the sequel to Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson.
Working with DaCosta on the film will be writer Megan McDonnell, who is also the writer for Disney+ Marvel series WandaVision. The sequel will include its leading lady, Brie Larson, as she returns to her role as Captain Marvel: a fighter pilot turned superhero.
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck co-directed the first film, but have now passed the torch to DaCosta to direct the 90s-set film. After Captain Marvel debuted in March of 2019, the film went on to earn a whopping $1.1 billion globally at the box office which led into the success of Avengers: Endgame. DaCosta's past credits include Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson. Her film, Candyman, which she co-wrote with Academy-award winner Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, was supposed to be released in theaters on June 12, but has been delayed to October 16 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Captain Marvel 2 is set to be released July 8, 2022. In the meantime, you can watch Captain Marvel on Disney+ now!
