In 1997, Netflix was founded as a rent-by-mail DVD service and now a little over 20 years later, the company has not only become a main content platform, but has also produced its own films and series.
Origin Story
Netflix was founded by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in 1997. The two birthed the idea out of Scotts Valley, California as a rent-by-mail DVD service that used a pay-per-rental model.
Customers would be able to choose a film from the Netflix website, put in an order, and it would be shipped to their door.
Where It is Now
Jump forward a little over 20 years and Netflix is now the most popular streaming platform. The site offers numerous television shows and movies ranging over various genres.
Netflix also acts as a production company that has produced over 1,500 original titles in eight years alone.
Plans for the Future
It doesn't look like Netflix is going anywhere for a while. For 2021 alone, Netflix has announced 30 original premieres, more than 50 original series returning, and dozens of original premieres set for 2022.
Congratulations to Netflix on 200 million subscribers! We can't wait to see what else is coming up.
