In the midst of the global protests over George Floyd, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is stepping up by donating $1 million to the Center for Police Equity.
The Center for Police Equity is a research organization that has partnered with over 25 police departments nationwide to fight racial bias while being completely data driven. Hastings' generous contribution not only helps improve resources but it also gives the organization a bigger platform to share their message and findings.
Hastings took to twitter to further promote the organization:
Great organization that has been working on this big problem for a decade. See Phil's TED talk. https://t.co/vZXxH0aAUE— Reed Hastings (@Reed Hastings) 1591158280
The Center for Policing Equity was not shy to show their gratitude and appreciation towards Hastings. The organization stated how his grant will "empower communities to hold law enforcement accountable to the values of equity and justice."
Within his twitter post, Hastings also encourages people to watch the Ted Talk of Philip Atiba Goff, the cofounder and CEO of Center for Policing Equity. This talk gives people the opportunity to be educated on the organization as well as the issues of bias in policing.
As Netflix was seemingly one of the first major companies to speak out about the issue following Floyd's death, it is no denying that Hastings heart is in the right place. Netflix took to twitter releasing this statement on May 30th:
"To be silent is to be complicit. Black lives matter. We have a platform, and we have a duty to our Black members, employees, creators and talent to speak up."
Center for Policing Equity
The Center for Policing Equity began when police chiefs expressed the need of social scientists to assist with crunching police data. It soon evolved into the demand of evaluating policies, police contact data and to inform the chiefs of how they were doing regarding issues of equality. In the video above, Goff states what the mission is of the organization, saying:
"What we're hoping to do is to allow police departments to do their jobs safer, more efficiently and most importantly aligned with their values."
Tracie Keesee, co-founder of the Center for Policing Equity, continued to share more about the importance of utilizing the justice database:
"When you have everyone just sort of holding onto their data and isolating it from everyone else, you can't really tell what's happening. But with the justice database, you have the ability now to rise this national level picture of what's going on."
With Hasting's large contribution and his past philanthropic work, it is no doubt he chose an exceptional organization that has the ability and tools to make an impact.
