In an appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," Melissa McCarthy addressed rumors of her upcoming role in "Thor: Love and Thunder."
In a video shared to Melissa's Instagram in December 2020, the actress and her husband, Ben Falcone, jokingly addressed Marvel Studios and "Thor: Love and Thunder" director Taika Waititi about making an appearance in the highly anticipated film. Throughout the video, the couple sang songs and offered up their hummus-making skills in order to boost their chances of being cast.
The video flew under the radar, with many simply laughing along with the couple and not taking the request seriously. Yet in March 2021, photos of Melissa and Ben on set of the movie alongside Chris Hemsworth were leaked. McCarthy was seen in a fake Hela costume, in what appeared to be a theatrical set up.
Fans theorize that this is a reference to the God of Thunder's third movie "Thor: Ragnarok." In the film, a theatrical retelling of the events of the previous movie "The Dark World" unfold on stage. Matt Damon, who portrayed Loki in the play, was also pictured alongside Melissa causing many to speculate that the theatrical format will make a triumphant return in the upcoming film.
When asked about the authenticity of the photos, Melissa remained coy, saying,
"I don't know. You know what that was, that was me going to my cousin Dawn's bridal book party."
"Thor: Love and Thunder" hits theaters July 8.
