Walt Disney Studios is developing an original movie musical based on the singer's discography

Last night, Variety announced the exclusive news that Walt Disney Studios is developing an original movie based on four time Grammy award winner Lionel Richie.

The new live-action film is tentatively titled All Night Long based on Richie's 1983 hit song and will pay tribute to his many hits.

Back in January 2020, Richie pitched the idea for the movie and sold it to Disney. Richie is currently a judge on ABC's American Idol, which is also owned by Disney.

The film will be produced by Richie and his manager Bruce Eskowitz, along with Cavalry Media executives Dana Brunetti and Matt Del Piano. Variety also shared that Pete Chiarelli will be writing the script.

Richie took to his social accounts to share the big news. The new film will be similar to other jukebox musicals such as Mamma Mia, Rocketman, and Bohemian Rhapsody and others which brought in substantial box office success critical acclaim.

Richie has sold over 100 million records worldwide and won an Academy Award for the Best Original Song "Say You, Say Me" from the 1985 film White Nights starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines.

No release date has been set for the film.
