Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving is taken on a new role - philanthropist. The point guard is committing $1.5 million of his own money to the WNBA players who are choosing to not play this season due to COVID-19 and social justice concerns.
The Massive Donation
Last Saturday, the 2020 WNBA season began, with the whole season taking place at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. This year, many key players including Liz Cambage, Chiney Ogwumike, Kristi Toliver and Tina Charles are forgoing the season for health reasons and social justice causes. The donation will go to players in these situations and will be part of the KAI Empowerment Initiative made by Kyrie Irving to provide WNBA players with "comprehensive financial literacy program" as well. According to Bleacher Report, Irving said:
"Whether a person decided to fight for social justice, play basketball, focus on physical or mental health, or simply connect with their families, this initiative can hopefully support their priorities and decisions,"
We commend Irving's actions and his promotion of women's basketball!
