Actor and Director John Cameron Mitchell will be joining Saturday Night Live's (1975-) Kate McKinnon on 'Joe Exotic,' an NBCU limited series on the rivalry between big cat lovers Carole Baskin and Joe Exotic.
'Joe Exotic'
The Universal Content Productions (UCP) working title limited series is set to premiere across NBCU's television and streaming entertainment services such as USA, Peacock, and NBC.
Executive Vice President of Casting & Talent Development at UCP Steven O'Neill stated,
"We are so excited to have John Cameron Mitchell, an adored icon of the LGBTQ community, take on this compelling role. His casting speaks to our ongoing vision of universal storytelling, and we can't wait for our audiences to experience the show."
John Cameron Mitchell's Entertainment Reel
The icon John Cameron Mitchell is known for his directing and leading role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), a film on a queer punk rock singer from East Berlin. Mitchell says he connects with Joe Exotic stating,
"I'm thrilled to take on the role of this modern folk antihero. Joe and I are the same age and like him, I grew up queer in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas so I feel like I know a little bit about this guy and his desperate attempt to conquer an inhospitable world."
The Rivalry Explored
The series will focus on the rivalry between former Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park owner and operator Joe Exotic and CEO of Big Cat Rescue Carole Baskin. As told in the Netflix series Tiger King (2020), Joe Exotic is currently in prison on charges of animal abuse and murder for hire towards Baskin.
SNL's Kate McKinnon plays the counter of Mitchell's character, a woman who many conspire may not be so innocent herself.
The limited series is one of two based on the true story of Joe Exotic, the other an Amazon project starring Nicolas Cage as Joe Exotic.
