Halle Berry posted an apology on Twitter Monday night.

Berry took part in an Instagram interview with hairstylist Christin Brown on Friday. When Berry was asked by Brown on whether she would cut her hair short for the role, Berry said:

"I'm thinking of a character where this woman is transgender. She's a woman that transitioned into a man."

Berry also spoke about why she considered taking on the role in the upcoming film, saying:

"I want to experience that world. This world, who this woman was, is so interesting to me. And that will probably be my next acting role."

The Negative Responses...

This is all bullshit, but the language here demonstrates @halleberry doesn’t even know what a trans man IS. This is why cis people can’t take trans roles - too many confuse our actual identities with their Oscar bait. I look forward to her apology and dropping of this part. https://t.co/macrUffM24

Many Twitter users hopped on the bandwagon saying that transgender roles should be for transgender people, with Twitter user @tempest071990 saying:

"Still trying to understand why Halle Berry would be interested in playing the role of a transgender man. Sigh!"

Twitter user @prestonmaxallen agreed, saying:

Other users applauded Berry for owning up to the mistake with activist April Reign tweeting:

"Thank you for listening and learning and providing opportunities for trans folks to have this role."

Comedian Billy Eichner hopped in on the train, saying:

"Halle Berry did the right thing. Acting isn't merely about artistry, it's about EMPLOYMENT."

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation group said on Twitter:

"We are pleased that @halleberry listened to the concerns of transgender people and learned from them. Other powerful people should do the same."
