BTS--One of the biggest musical groups in the world-- is wrapping up Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the U.S. with a visit to the White House!
The Korean boy band was in Washington yesterday to discuss the need for Asian representation in the United States, as well as the growing number of anti-asian hate crimes happening in the country.
In the briefing room with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, each member of the massively popular boy band took turns speaking to the press, which was later interpreted in both Korean and English.
In their speech, the group of performers acknowledged the vast amount of "cultures" and "languages" that make up their fanbase, better known as "the ARMY." In his part of the speech, Jungkook said:
"We still feel surprised that music created by South Korean artists reaches so many people around the world, transcending musical and cultural barriers."
The speech continued with Suga saying,
"It's not wrong to be different. Maybe equality begins when we open up and embrace all of our differences."
Another member, V, said "everyone has a history." He continued,
"We hope today is one step forward to respecting and understanding each and every one as a valuable person."
In a conversation with President Joe Biden, the "Butter" singers thanked him for his recent actions to help make Asian Americans feel safer amid rising rates of hate crimes against them during the pandemic.
Speaking on behalf of the group, RM told the President:
"We want to thank you, sincerely, for your decision [to sign] the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act in to law." He continued, "We just want to be a little help. We truly appreciate the White House and government's trying to find solutions."
