Jungle Cruise

The latest Disney film topped the weekend box office despite releasing in theaters and streaming simultaneously.

Movie-goers are still getting used to this new model that has taken over a large portion of the industry. We constantly are seeing new films release on streaming platforms and in theaters but the public and the industry itself is not quite sure if this is the permanent future model or if the global pandemic is the overwhelming factor in the decision to move releases to streaming.

Jungle Cruise Releases on Disney+

People in the US are very familiar with Disney+ Premier Access after we have seen Mulan, Cruella, Black Widow, and countless other huge titles make it to Disney's special streaming platform. You can get access to this tier by paying extra for the newly released titles, however these titles also have a history of transitioning into free movies after about four months from the original release.

This may be motivating people to not go to theaters but it also may be dragging in more money for the films as those that stream the movies may not have gone to theaters due to Covid-19. The entire debate is very tricky and the industry is having a difficult time figuring out the correct model.

Let's take a look at this weekend's box office top 10:

1. Jungle Cruise

Jungle Cruise($34.2M in opening weekend). This Disney movie is based off of an amusement park ride and features Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Emily Blunt.

2. The Green Knight

The Green Knight ($6.78 in opening weekend). Dev Patel stars in this medieval Arthurian tale as King Arthur's headstrong nephew.

3. Old

Old ($6.76M in week two, $30.6M total). This M. Night Shyamalan thriller follows a family on holiday as they go to a secluded beach where everyone mysteriously begins to age rapidly.

4. Black Widow

Black Widow($6.4M in week four, $167M total). Marvel's latest film has done decently well in total, however this week was a flop in the theater numbers. Hopefully streaming totals will eventually put this film up where it should be.

5. Stillwater

Stillwater ($5.12M in opening weekend). Matt Damon stars in this thriller about an oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma going to France to exonerate his daughter from a murder she claims to be falsely accused of.

6. Space Jam 2

Space Jam 2($4.265M in week three, $60.7M total). The long-awaited sequel starring LeBron James has been successful compared to other films, however it may not be the legendary movie that we all remember the original as.

7. Snake Eyes

Snake Eyes($4M in week two, $22.2M total). This G.I. Joe Origin movie stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a normal man who learns the ways of the ninja warrior and earns his place in a new home.

8. F9

F9 ($2.65M in week six, $168.5M total). The Fast & Furiouscrew has been wildly successful for two decades and this film is no different. Vin Diesel continues to dominate the box office despite the pandemic.

9. Escape Room 2

Escape Room 2 ($2.2M in week three, $20.55M total). The sequel to the horror-thriller hit has been doing decently well so far. We can expect to see this horror franchise on streaming platforms and there may be some more movies to follow.

10. The Boss Baby 2: Family Business

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business ($1.3M in week five, $53.4M total). The family-friendly movie is back with this comedic sequel featuring Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow, and a star-studded cast of voice actors.
