Blackout Tuesday

Celebrities from every industry are joining together to honor the #BlackoutTuesday movement.

Today, folks are participating in a social media 'Blackout' to stand in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter protests, as well as to honor the life of George Floyd. Users are posting a plain black screen on their feed, some including messages beneath them such as #BlackoutTuesday.

This movement originally started in the music industry to hold huge record labels such as RCA Records, Epic Records, Def Jam, Capitol Records, Republic Records, and Atlantic Records, and artists accountable and to help continue the fight to stop racism.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry shared very powerful words with her post telling her followers:

"I hope that #BlackoutTuesday gives us all (especially in the music industry) an opportunity to take what we're learning and put it into action on Wednesday, and every day going forward."


Drake also shared a photo in honor of #BlackoutTuesday on his Instagram page. He was one of the first celebrities to post for the day. He shared this caption with followers:

"Side by side."

Nicole Sherzinger

Nicole Scherzinger shared a post in honor of the break artists are taking today to stand in solidarity. She used the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner also shared the photo on her Instagram feed with the caption:


Britney Spears

Britney Spears shared this post prior to the blackout that started today. In her caption she writes:

"To start I will be participating in #BlackoutTuesday tomorrow. I won't be posting on social media and I ask you all to do the same. We should use the time away from our devices to focus on what we can do to make the world a better place...for ALL of us!"

Blake Lively

Blake Lively joined the movement, as well, captioning her photo with the hashtag #BlackoutTuesday.


Rihanna shared a post honoring that today should be a break from social media. In her caption she wrote:

"We ain't buying s**t!!!! and we ain't selling s**t neither!! gang gang! #BLACKOUTTUESDAY AF!!!"

Idris Elba

Idirs Elba posted his picture on Twitter as a way to hopefully honor a new beginning. He wrote:

"This ain't a movie/ ain't calling cut/ we cutting the throat of the old system/ so if you ain't with us/ then you better run. New breed."

Lebron James

Lebron James joined the movement with his post on Instagram as he also used the hashtags #blackouttuesday and #BLM.

Jamie Oliver

Jamie Oliver posted his black screen on his Instagram page with the caption:

"Black out Tuesday. Love all Serve all."

From the music industry to the rest of Hollywood, and even the entire world, people are coming together for this movement. Social media users are finding a way to give a voice to a problem that has been going on for way too long.
