Marvel Hosts Worldwide Premiere Event for 'Black Widow'

The super spy's solo story was shown at a star-studded series of ceremonies.

On Tuesday night, Black Widow had its first official screening at various red carpet fan events in London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and New York City. Stars from the film and some of Marvel's top brass attended each event, though lead actress Scarlett Johansson only made a prerecorded appearance.

The heroine's solo film is finally premiering after years of audiences demanding a Black Widow movie and then another year of pandemic-induced delays, so it's no surprise that Disney chose to celebrate the occasion with a series of worldwide viewing parties. At the Melbourne event, the film's director, Cate Shortland, hosted a short Q&A, while Marvel's head honcho Kevin Feige attended the LA event. Most notably, Little Women co-star Florence Pugh made an appearance at the London event to talk to fans. In the film, she plays Yelena Belova, a zesty sister figure to Johansson's character who shares the Black Widow moniker.

In Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson returns in what may be her final outing as the beloved super spy, but this movie is more than just a sendoff. Rachel Weisz, who starred in The Favourite, plays a mysterious character with her own claim to the Black Widow name. Stranger Things star David Harbour and Doctor Who actor O. T. Fagbenle also appear in the film as a Russian version of Captain America and a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, respectively.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Johansson expressed some sadness about leaving the role behind, but also spoke highly about her final film: "I think it's bittersweet. I've had an incredible decade working with my Marvel family. I'm going to miss not seeing them every 18 months ... But I feel really proud of this film and I think it's great to go out on a high note. This movie is so different from any other Marvel film that we've done so far, so yeah... like I said, it's bittersweet."

Black Widow debuts in select theaters and on Disney+ for premier access viewers on July 9th, 2021.
