Hair Love is an Oscar-winning animated short film written and directed by Matthew A. Cherry following the life of Zuri, her dad, and their crazy journey with Zuri's hair, highlighting the beauty of Black hair. The newest narrator of the book is Beyoncé and Jay-Z's child Blue Ivy.
'Hair Love'
Matthew A. Cherry began his career as a wide receiver in the NFL, playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and Baltimore Ravens. He retired from football in 2007 to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and it paid off.
Cherry wrote and directed Hair Love in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation.
Hair Love is about Zuri, her father, and their journey with navigating Zuri's hair. Zuri is a young African American girl who is set on a beautiful hairstyle for a big day. Zuri's father is a classic girl dad and teams up with his daughter to conquer thee task. After numerous attempts, the team figures out how to do the hairstyle and the audience can't do anything but feel warm inside.

Actress and comedian Issa Rae (Little, Insecure) stars as the voiceover of Natural Hair Vlogger and Mom. The film won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2020. Cherry made the book to go along with the film in 2019 and families everywhere have been touched seeing an accurate representation of Black hair and the difficulties managing such a beautiful mane.
Real Life Hair Love
On The Kelly Clarkson Show, real life dads visited the set, along with Matthew A. Cherry, to show and discuss their real life struggle with their daughters' hair. This hilarious segment featured videos from the dads' homes and their battles managing their daughters' hairs.
Their daughters then joined the show and gave their dads a 10/10 for their hairdos.
Actor and comedian Lil Rel Howery (Get Out, Tag) also shared a video of his experience with real life hair love in this hilarious video with his daughter, Brittni.

Actress Gabrielle Union (Bring it On, L.A.'s Finest) was featured on Hair Love's Instagram to read the book to families everywhere. Union read this story in partnership with Save with Stories, an organization that helps educate and feed children.
