"Avatar: The Way of Water," the second film of the "Avatar" franchise, has been in the making for over a decade. Director and creator, James Cameron, revealed he might be moving on from the franchise after the upcoming movie.

Released in 2009, "Avatar" became one of the highest grossing movies of all time. The film pioneered motion capture technology, taking fifteen years to develop. Its sequel has taken over a decade. The reason, Cameron told Empire yesterday, is that "Avatar" films are "all-consuming."

After dedicating over twenty of his years to perfecting the franchise, Cameron admitted it might be time to start the next chapter of his career. He explained,

“I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting.”

Cameron has a vision for the rest of the "Avatar" franchise that will require that the director who takes over understand his plans. However, leaving his "child" was not an easy decision, and he assured fans he will be very careful in choosing who he decides to “pass the baton” to.

"Avatar" was known in its time for its symbolism and deep exploration of environmentalism and colonialism. Cameron promised the future films will elaborate on these further,

“Everything I need to say about family, about sustainability, about climate, about the natural world, the themes that are important to me in real life and in my cinematic life, I can say on this canvas.”

He hopes that all five of his planned films will be made, calling the final product, “one big story, ultimately.”

As more glimpses into "Avatar: The Way Of Water" are revealed, fans are highly anticipating its release. A deeper dive (literally!) into the world of Pandora will become available when the film releases in theaters globally December 16, 2022.
