Alex Trebek Discusses New Memoir on "Good Morning America"

Alex Trebek shares new details of cancer fight l GMA

The game show host gets candid about battling cancer and bearing his soul through a memoir.

The beloved Jeopardy host, Alex Trebek, spoke with ABC News about his health and new memoir The Answer Is.

In his memoir, Trebek writes about his decision to stop cancer treatment if his current program does not work. He writes:

"I'm going to stick with this current protocol, then that's it. If it doesn't work I'll probably stop treatment. It wasn't an easy conversation, and it isn't any easier writing these words. Quality of life was an important consideration."

In an extremely personal interview, Trebek invited ABC News's TJ Holmes to his home to sit down safely and socially distanced to speak about the physical and emotional toll of cancer, saying,

"There was one day a few weeks ago, when Jeanie asked me in the morning 'how do you feel?' and I said 'I feel like I want to die.' It was that bad...I feel like I am a terrible burden to her and that bothers me tremendously."

Trebek choked up when candidly discussing his wife of 30 years calling her a "saint" and saying,

"I am in awe of the way she handles it."

Jeopardy is set to resume filming in a matter of weeks, and Trebek plans to be hosting as usual when that time comes, sharing news from his doctor,

"My doctor told me he is counting on me celebrating two years of survivorship past the diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer and that two years happens in February so I expect to be around because he said I will be around and I expect to be hosting the show if I am around."

Doctors have told Trebek he is "going in the right direction," despite his unusual experience with the disease.

With the release of his new memoir, Trebek hopes to allow his fans to get to know him on a deeper level. He said,

"I've received so many expressions of love and so many prayers said on my behalf since the diagnosis was made public that I thought maybe the people would care to learn something about me."

He ends the uplifting interview with:

"Here I am folks, eat me up!"

The iconic host is not ready to say goodbye to the show yet and we are not ready to see him go.
