"This year’s ballot recognizes a diverse group of incredible artists, each who has had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture. Their music not only moved generations, but also influenced the sound of countless artists that followed," said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, criteria for the nominees is as follows,
"Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll."
Terry Stewart, the President of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and member of the nominating committee elaborated on the process in a letter to fans,
"Candidates are reviewed and discussed relative to their impact on this music that we broadly call rock and roll. The innovation and influence of these artists is also critical. Gold records, number one hits, and million sellers are really not appropriate standards for evaluation."
Fans can vote for who they want to see inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame from now through April 29 at the Rock Hall of Fame website. The top five artists with the most fan votes will then be added to a "fans' ballot" which will be included with the total ballots of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame committee.
