'We Don't Talk About Bruno' Reaches Number One on Billboard

We Don't Talk About Bruno (From "Encanto")

For the first time since 1993, an original Disney song hits the top of the charts.

Disney's newest original film Encanto premiered to critical acclaim. A few weeks later, a song from the movie has officially claimed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 List.

Encanto follows the story of Mirabel, the only member in her family without magical powers. When she investigates family secrets, she learns of her disowned uncle, Bruno, who the rest of her relatives insist they "don't talk about".

Now, it seems everyone's talking about Bruno, as 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' is the first song from a Disney animated film to reach number one since Aladdin's 'A Whole New World' in 1993. It also beat out Frozen's 'Let It Go', which only ever peaked at number five.

'We Don't Talk About Bruno' shows all the members of Mirabel's family share their stories of when Bruno's prophecies wronged them, making for a fun but enticing number for audiences to become swept up in.

Also surprised by the success of the song was its writer, Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda, who said,

"‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ [has] kind of taken over the world along with the rest of the Encanto soundtrack. Helps you have the perspective of: The opening weekend is not the life of the movie. It’s just the very roughest draft. Two months out, people are talking about Bruno, and his whole family.”

When asked for his speculation on why 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' became such a hit, Miranda cited the Covid-19 pandemic, and the isolation the world has experienced through it.

“The notion of a bunch of voices happening within one home feels very resonant, with hindsight. There’s kind of a part for everyone to play in singing along with the song. If you’re not bopping to this melody, another melody is coming along in two seconds because almost every character gets a little feature in it.”

Encanto is available to watch in theaters and on Disney+.
